Techniques for standing starts on an upright tandem?
I posted lasted week with questions regarding our recently acquired Santana Team Al.
After new chains, tires and tensioning the wheels, we gave it a go this morning. Overall, it was a pretty good 15 miles but we had some problems getting started and I do have questions about the start. Our first couple of attempts were not successful. With the stoker 'clipped in' and my left foot on the ground, I brought my right pedal to 1 o'clock and gave it a thrust. We wobbled badly and I had to put my foot down to maintain balance. We tried again but still very unsteady. We then decided to try the technique we used with our recumbent tandem - left feet on the ground, right feet in pedals, thrust and go. That worked much better. It was a little more tricky then on the recumbet which had IPS however better than our first couple of tries. We practiced this technique a few times and felt pretty confident and comfortable with it for the rest of the ride.
Before we get set in our ways, is their a better way? Maybe it is subjective, but before we imprint this technique I'd like to know how most tandem teams get started.
Thanks.
