I thinkt the reason you're not getting the responses you wanted, or anticipated, is that the dynamics of the race situation, and tactical considerations are what's going to dictate your tactics, moreso than the psycology of demoralizing your competition.
At most, the psychological effect on the motivation of your opponents would only be one tactical consideration, and not one that you can really isolate to the exclusion of other tactical considerations.
