Gene likes to hand wring about all the changes, like cell phones and more distracted drivers, but there is no evidence that driving is more dangerous today than it was 30 years ago, or cycling in traffic is more dangerous than it was 30 years ago.
Most collisions are still usually the fault of the cyclist, and most of the others could have been avoided had the cyclist been riding more defensively. There is a tiny percentage over which we have no control whatsoever, just like there is a tiny probability that the next airplane you get on will fall out of the sky. We can't worry about these things that are out of our control (unless we stay home on our couches), if we wish to live.
