If you did that in my city, people would think something was wrong with you. Then again, in my city roads are wide and we have bicycle lanes.
I cycle in rural-ish Prairieville. Narrow blacktop with no bike lanes (or shoulders on most roads - this is old swampland).

Want to really irritate motorists? Pass 'em on the shoulder so that you can get up to the front. If you want respect on the road, ride respectfully (and lawfully). Unless you're racing, who cares if you're slowed down a bit?
