Cars require more space for parking and in urban environments that is another cost.
It also means that you need to pay for more space at home for a car if you don't have "free" street parking.
Free street parking is actually subsidized through taxes that pay for the extra asphalt and curb.
I pay $9 every 18 months for my free street parking, and $15 for a guest permit. Spaces aren't guaranteed, and my car can't be used from late July 3rd until July 5th because of it.
