I think I understand the problem now. I'm guessing everyone who has posted in this thread self-identifies as a cyclist. We either ride in our spare time or commute or both but cycling is an important part of our lives. I'm sure there are car forums where the majority of people self-identify as drivers. Driving and their car are important parts of their lives. Most people, though, would not self-identify as drivers as driving is just a means to an end and if something better came along, they'd use that. My guess is that most ninja salmon riders also do not self-identify as cyclists. Again, it's just a means to an end.
Let me try to clarify my point, then. When we advocate for cycling, we advocate for cyclists. We should be using present tense to help other realize that our situations are still current. Ninja salmon riders are cyclists while they are on their bikes just as mom in the minivan is a driver while she's shuttling the kids around. We need to advocate for the safety of all cyclists and not separate ourselves into an elite group for the sake of feeling a little better than the ninja salmon.
I think you're right and I think it's an important point. Snobbery is too common in the cycling world, and it's always ugly when you see it.
I know a 17 year old kid who rides a BMX up to 60 miles a day, every day, wearing jeans that sag off his butt. If he isn't one tough
cyclist, I don't know who is.
