A few things to note.

Donating your organs or signing a donor card is not the same as donating your whole body. You can do that but they are not the same.

Also telling relatives may or may not work. It is assuming your relatives are available. There is a very limited amount of time organs can be transplanted after someone dies. If you do not have a donor card and your next of kin is not notified in time then there is nothing that can be done. It would simply be illegal to take any organs. I don't think there is a surgical team out there who would risk their careers to take organs either prematurely or illeaglly.

I think we learned in very recient history how important it is to have your wishes explicitly written down AS WELL AS making everyone aware.

I would like to stress however to donate or not donate is a personal choice and I would never criticize anyone for not donating for any reason. But there are a lot of myths out there and often its the false imformation that some people base their decision not to donate.
