Stopped to vote on the way to work. Fellow bike commut4er was unlocking and heading off just as I arrived to lock up and go in to vote.
Had my closest near miss in a while on the way in to work after voting. 8:45 AM. Sun is already up and it's bright out. The lady turns right from a side street onto the main street I was on. I was doing 18-20 mph in this stretch (it's an ever so slight downhill). She had stopped, but she didn't look to see if anything was coming. I know because I was trying to establish eye contact as I approached. Having made none I got leary of the situation. Good thing I did, because she pulled right into my path. Had she looked, she would have had a clear line of sight to me in my BRIGHT ORANGE long sleeve tee-shirt and my front blinkie going. Good thing for her I wasn't a Mack truck, or she'd be in a world of hurt right now. Don't know WHAT she was thinking. Locked up my brakes trying to slow down and came within a couple feet of her rear bumper as she started to accelerate. Too bad that she had all her windows rolled up on this chilly morning, or she would have actually hear me yell at her, "WHOA! Look before you turn next time!!!" I thought some other less pleasant things, but refrained from yelling them. She wouldn't have heard them anyway. Honestly, I don't think she ever knew I was there even after she pulled out. I tried to chase her down at the next traffic light, but it turned green and she was off before I got to roll up next to her and give her some friendly advice, or at least a friendly hand gesture or a WTF were you thinking look.
Apart from the near miss with the oblivious woman, it was a nice commute in this morning. Getting into the colder mornings. It was in the 30s. I had a pair of base layer tights under a pair of cargo shorts, and a long sleeve shirt over a short sleeve shirt. Half-finger gloves. A little cold at the start, but felt perfect once I got warmed up a mile or so into the ride. Could ride harder and not sweat at all. Lovin' it! Perfect.
