The difference between your area and mine is probably that your area often requires the level of road you describe to connect two destinations. In my area that's virtually never a requirement.

If all you have is rural roads with 50 mph speed limits. Then we have those too. It is what I mostly ride, since I live in rural South Jersey. The only other option where I live is getting dizzy on some cul de sac or riding a MUP.
