Need some advice. Just getting my GF into cycling. I bought her a Schwinn FastBack XS for her. It comes with straps for pedals. Now that she has a couple weeks of experience and doing well, I'd like to introduce her to cleats/pedals.

My LBS suggested double-sided SPD pedals for two reasons: 1) easy-entry due to double-sided pedals 2) recessed cleats for easier walking off the bike.

To save $$ (at least initially), I have some old (mid-90's or so) SPD M737 pedals that I've had on my mountain bike ... and I'd like to clean them up and just use them on her bike initially. Besides being heavier than the equivalent double-sided Shimano SPD pedals of today ... do think they would perform well enough to give her an idea of what it is like to use clipless pedals?

If so, how should I clean them? Just take them apart (i.e. they ave a ton of philips screws holding the parts), clean them with degreaser/WD-40, etc. and then re-grease and put back together?

Thanks for any suggestions!

Edited to add: BUMP
