Thanks all for the responses - it always makes you feel better to know you're not the only crazy one. I definitely will not be riding on the wheel (I wouldn't even think of it - I don't know how I could). I'll be heading to my favorite mechanic on Monday (first day he works) and see what he has to say - if it can be saved, he's the one to do it. I'll report back on the diagnosis.
