The best case for Phil hubs is that in addition to being a fine hub, they are built in the US by a small(compared to Shimano) company that employs skilled craftsmen who are being paid a fair wage. I think that counts for something. Idealism aside, I still can't afford a set of Phils at this point

Also, the fact that they take a cartridge bearing is very attractive to anyone who doesn't want to worry about mantinence, ie commuters and long-distance tourers.
To continue the original thread, is there a consensus of any sort that Shimano 105 hubs would be suitable for loaded touring? I'd rather not take the chances "cold setting" my frame to accept a 135mm hub. This wheelset only has to last for a year or two of constant service, but I wouldn't mind getting more out of it if possible.
