The attitude person who called the killer at the jail is pretty typical of what I hear in many places in the western U.S. While touring down the CA coast I once left a couple of students at a store in Sonoma County. They ditched their bikes and just hung out like "regular" tourists. They were quite shocked to hear a couple of truck drivers discussing how fun it is to scare cyclists either into the ditch or, better yet, off a cliff. This year I had a Frenchman I met along the coast tell me the French have a word for what he experienced in Southern Oregon. It translates as self-hatred.
