Now please educate me about shifting the balance/grip to the rear. The SMLBK8 is gone and I am waiting to pick up a new back tire, so I'm back on a HT for the rest of the week. Money wise I would like to stick to just picking up a back tire, but it sounds like you recommend Excavators and being able to groove your tires for your situation? Can you help me out here?
Grip balance:

You have been suffering from the rear tire losing traction and sliding around at a level below the grip level of the front tire. You may not be pushing to the edge of the front tire because the rear is the limiting factor.

If you change to a grippier rear tire you may be able to carry more speed and instead of the rear wheel stepping out in the turns, the front can "push," slide out or just want to go straight. You are stressing the front tire more.

Most riders do well with tires that have similar grip front and rear or slightly more grip at the front. It is not much fun to have the front end washing out.

If you have the clearance you could move the Karma to the rear and get an Advantage, Excavator, Blue Groove, Conti Trail King... For the front.
