Do you have aerobars on there? Can you put a 9 spd cassette on the wheel, or is it a 10 spd wheel? Without being able to figure out exactly what is going on there I think option 1 is probably your best of those listed. Why do you have brifters, did you take parts off a road bike to build this up?
