I generally check my bikes from time to time when i'm at home, so if there are any problems, I can take care of it before I get out on the road.
If this ever happens again, just adjust your stops next time so the rear derailler doesn't retract all the way to the highest gear.

As for tools, I don't carry anything but water. Probably a bad thing.. But I suppose it could be worse.
