Personally, I'm a life long yellow dog Democrat, but I've long thought that the Republicans and conservatives missed an opportunity by not supporting bicycling as a fiscally responsible transportation option. Not that there aren't exceptions of course, the Tea Party candidate Jim Schneller of Pennsylvania for example, but I assume for most that the associated implications of bicycling for transportation are too antithetical to the big "C" conservatives' stated causes. That being said, I think for this reason, "We're cyclists, united by a love of the bike, not by a political ideology," that we need to advocate the advantages of bicycling that are not immediately associated with the American left wing, i.e. correlation with personal wealth, less public money needed for public parking and transportation infrastructure, improved quality of life, increased mobility, safer, quieter neighborhoods, higher property values, and more free time. I'm all for helping the environment for instance, but I don't bicycle to do so; I bicycle because I'm a cheap little b*****d and it's fun. Not polluting when I travel locally is just an advantageous corollary.
I want this on a fender sticker, "United By the Love of the Bike."
