I recently priced out United airlines for shipping a regular bike in a bike case. US$100 for US/CA/MEXICO, US$180 to the UK, US$200 to Japan.

"Regular Baggage" on United is US$25 for the first bag, US$35 for the second bag. So presumably if you could fit your bike into the following spec ...

Bag limits:
  • bags weigh less than 50 lbs. (23 kg);
  • do not exceed 62 linear inches (158 linear cm)**; and/or
  • any of your checked bags are considered special items.
**linear measurement = length + width + height

"Special items" are bikes, incidentally, so they may try to charge you anyway...

I usually fly United ... so I am most familiar with these rules, and feel United is fairly "typical" for a US carrier.
