Okay, great, I will just wait for the new levers and cables to arrive, then I'll install everything all at once.

I just remembered this, I still have to try an install a chain guard. This will be tricky due to the almost non-existent space between the outer surface of the chainwheel and the inner surface of the crank arm. That space is where the guard needs to sit. I understand how to mount it to the frame but right now there's inadequate clearance for the guard. If I move the chain wheel to the middle position on the triple crank, that might make some room but it will then look strange. The chain guard (and even the fenders) are totally unnecessary but I want to try it.
