The biggest drawback is that it'll break sooner. You'll just end up buying 3 sora shifters rather than 1 ultegra (i'm just making up numbers, I don't know the real life-spans, but someone on here had numbers at one time).
Actually, the cheaper parts tend to last longer than the more expensive. But there is a lot more to shifting than cost, and how many gears you have. If his bike is anything like my allez, its sora shifters 3x8. However it probably already has a 9 spead Tiagra RD on it.
