Our first son was a preemie who spent 1 week in the ICU and stayed on oxygen for 3 weeks after coming home. This summer I did a 560 mile bike tour with him. He's 16, and he kicks my ass up a pass. He's a great kid. At some point, colic ends, but eventually turns into the teen years. In hindsight, colic is easier.

Maybe the OP and I are wired differently, but after having a baby in ICU, and seeing how so many of the other babies in incubators were struggling and sometimes not even making it, I was too scared back then to even think about riding a bike. Dude, cycling is fun, but it's selfish. Good fathers aren't selfish, but if you want to look at it selfishly, the truth is that you'll likely get more joy from your kids than you can ever give to them.

One of the best things I've ever done was taking off three months from work after each of our three kids was born (my wife had the first three months and I had the second three months). I don't know how they, or I, survived. But it changed the way I look at life and the way I look at my kids. Try looking at them on their terms and not always yours. Kids grow up. Sometimes parents do too.
