The idea that more expensive products are inherently better is absurd. A lot of times you're not paying for better engineering but for better marketing and a higher brand image. We might not all be piling on if this were a product sold by Kodak, Sony, or Dell. Beyond that, if Geoman had named his price at $250 and only sold a quarter of the units, would the owners who experienced failures have even owned a MS in the first place? This recall might not have ever even happened and people would be none the wiser. From the threads I've looked at there have been only a couple of reported incidents.
With that said, I hope Geoman has this event accounted for in his contingency plan.
