I have driven that road many times and there is no way I would attempt it on a weekend or holiday. Some parts have a separate trail, but a lot of it is narrow, two lane road with no shoulder. Add in large trucks, people pulling giant boats who have no idea how to trailer, and insane traffic. Late spring might be the best time to try this as that is the start of the off season.

I just drove back from the Keys and was thinking on the way down, would I want to ride this route? There were sections between Key Largo and Islamorada that were under construction with no shoulder and very dicey. If there is traffic, I'd feel very uncomfortable, especially riding solo. South of Islamorda was very nice.
You might want to contact some of the local bike shops in this area to get some advise.
