I think smoothness of shifting has as much to do with the derailleur as the shifters.
Shifters actually have very little to do with the smoothness of shifting; it's all in the derailleur and the chainrings or cassette cogs. That said, it's
impossible to make SRAM shift as smoothly as Shimano. And, on the flip side, it's impossible to make Shimano shift as quickly as SRAM.
