Parenthetically, I don't see why any seemingly-obvious tip should be taken as insulting. Dozens, maybe hundreds of other people besides the OP are perusing this thread and will do so in the future as they research how to work on their old Raleigh bikes. That's how noobs (like me) learn, and it seems to me that is one of the best aspects of this very valuable board.
