I've had very good luck using a drill bit (new and sharp) that is WAY bigger than the rivet head; essentially, what you're doing is just shaving down the rivet head until it's only wafer-thin. It's not at all a dangerous proposition if you keep the speed down and use plenty of lube/coolant. But use a sharp bit, a dull one is def. going to slip and mangle.
