Another consideration is possibly using manual focus gear since a lot of time it is smaller and lighter and thus easier to pack into a small bag. If memory serves correctly the horse shot was taken with an old Contax Zeiss 85/2.8 mounted on my 5D. This lens is super sharp and gives great color yet is no larger than an average 50/1.4 AF lens. Oh and only cost me around $250 which is another bonus with the old manual focus lenses.

This was shot with a $40 M42 mount Pentax 50/1.4 lens:



Cheap yet very good and if it breaks in a crash no big deal at its price.
