Is it square taper BB? If so, the crank will eventually move inwards on the spindle as the spindle / crank interface wears.
You could try a spacer or two in between your cog and the hub, then mount your chainring on the outside of your crank.

Not a conversion, it's a square taper, didn't have that issue at all with the previous Square Tapered BB with the crank arms on it and the bearings were shot when I went to this setup. Since I made this thread, I went back to a 50 from the 53 and am good on room. Besides I'm probably changing crank setup, soon.
And I'm not putting a mallet to my frame.
