Mostly pea gravel trails. Most nicely groomed and wide. I rode my MTB, the knobby tires were a bit of an overkill, but did provide additional stability on the gravel/dirt paths. I could have ridden a road bike with 25's or 32's on it. A cross bike would be the ticket. Several wooden pedestrian style bridges that present some bunny hopping opportunities. If the wooden decking is wet in the early morning they can be quite slippery.

It seemed most people opt to travel by bus to the top and have a mostly downhill run. I went with a non riding friend and so we opted not to do the entire Creeper. I did talked him into riding from Damascus to Whitetop. Very slight grade up to Whitetop, and you really can't coast back to Damascus, there is plenty of light pedaling involved.
