The more you study that photo the more you wonder if the smaller front wheel is actually achieving anything as far as extra speed goes.
When they made the funny bikes a few years later where they actually had the top tube slopping lower at the front end in order to allow the rider to get lower. But these Colnago's TTs are straight, they are at least riding track stems for some extra drop, although the rider in the front seems like the only one whoms stem is low enough in the headtube to for the bars to be any lower than a normal stem.

Obvliously the smaller front wheels we're having a good advantage otherwise the configuration wouldn't of been banned, but im sure taller riders had a difficult time making it work for them. Weird.
