My impression is that the Gran Fondo Whistler (which I'm riding, too, BTW) is a profit-making enterprise. They have a charity tie-in but I don't think it's a real charity ride. It's a business.
It's a very price ride ($250 or so?) but I think it's already sold out -- 4,000 rider max.
