A number of different manufacturers are using bamboo to make bikes and many of them are truly beautiful. From what I've read though, they're quite expensive and performance-wise, not really a match for similarly priced conventionally made bikes.
That load is quite far back behind the hub. Unless the load is incredibly light, I'd think that there would be handling issues. Perhaps the load is placed that far back in order to ensure that all the load and shock is transferred to the wheel rather than the frame?
