How long: When I was younger, I rode my bike everywhere. About two months ago I started walking and realized my sore right Achilles was not going to do well with that so started daydreaming about riding a bike again but thought I was too heavy. Come to find out, I'm not alone and so decided to just do it and am very happy I did.
Trying to lose: Yes, I'm trying to lose but right now just getting out of the house and exercising is a big step for me. The first few weeks of riding, I gained 6 pounds but have been slowly losing since then. Biking definitely makes me thirsty and I find myself craving water while riding and for several hours afterward so I am trying to give up my Coke addiction and drinking water instead.
Ultimate goal: I would ultimately like to lose 100 pounds but will be happy to go in 25-pound increments. I tend to obsess over my weight and am trying to stay away from those numbers and am trying to concentrate more on my new biking habit.
How often do I ride: Four to six times per week during the holidays because of being so busy but once those are over, there is no reason I cannot ride every day for at least an hour. We have some new sidewalks in the neighborhood and some roads connecting to other subdivisions so that gives me a variety, which I definitely need!

Of note: My oldest brother, who lives in Indianapolis, was hit from behind while riding his bike and was severely and permanently injured as a result. This happened in November of 2006. He is in an assisted living facility and will be for the rest of his life because of his injuries. The girl who hit him was speeding and talking on her cell phone. Let this be a lesson to all of us about using a cell phone while driving and the danger it poses to cyclists.
