One significant difference I've noticed between riding fixed vs. geared is that fixed gear riding is more of a full body workout. After a big climb with only one gear my arms, back and core feel it as much as my legs. With gears you're able to gear down, stay in the saddle and just use your legs. That might have something to do with it.
