They also work for riders with only one working hand. The son of one of my neighbors was born with one badly stunted arm and hand so they were useless for operating a bicycle brake. Their LBS fitted the lever shown in the OP to allow him to operate both brakes with the one good hand. I know the LBS had to be careful to get both brake cables properly sychronized.
