I don't think the chrome fork will look terribly out of place. Opinions?
Go for it. So common was this repair that, sometimes, I think that's the way the bicycles, be they from France, Asia, England or where ever, were meant to be. And, it will look just fine.

You might even want to paint the mid section of the blade leaving the crown and blade ends chrome, with a little red stripe where the paint meets the chrome. Sorta like this...
