Who cares what other noncyclists think?
+1 on that.

I'm a round 5'2" Athena and I know I look downright comical in my cycling get up. Know what? I don't care. It WORKS. My one admission to 'modesty' are mountain biking shorts over my lycra leggings. I wear a cycle helmet with a billed cap beneath to keep the sun off my face. I know it makes me look like a demented mushroom, but it's better than a sunburned face for someone allergic to sunscreen and the 'sun bills' on every cycle helmet I've ever seen are a JOKE. Less than an inch deep isn't going to do anything for a long angled Swedish sun. Not unless I'm staring at my navel the whole time and twisting my head at weird angles to keep the shade on my skin.

I do what it takes to keep certain things from sucking the joy out of my cycling. I wear clothing that doesn't leave painful chaff points and helps keeps me cool and dry. I wear long leggings and a long sleeved cycle jersey year round to stop sunburn. That gets me laughed at a lot by the hardcore cyclists who are strutting around with bronzed legs in 85 F with tiny shorts though I'm sure they laugh at other things too. The alternative is to turn my cycling into a nightmare which means I don't do it... or wear what I need and have the time of my life.
