Years ago during the brief time I rode a bike with sew-up tires, following a 1,500 foot descent, I arrived back home. I leaned my bike against a wall near the door. A couple of minutes later while in another room, I heard an explosion, and a second later I heard my bike crashing to the floor. I got new rims shortly thereafter and have never used sew-ups again. FWIW, I don't weigh a lot, and weighed even less back then.
I've done a lot of touring in mountains, so I've enjoyed a lot of long descents. I often stop for several minutes during long descents until my rims have cooled enough so that I am able to touch them for more than an instant.
