I agree with the caveat that on a long tour you might go through more climatic regions and so need a couple of extra bits of clothing
True, but in first world countries it can be managed by mailing stuff too and from home when going from one season or region to another. To me that is preferred to carrying stuff I won't need for a month or won't need again for the rest of the trip.
