I wonder if the US is the only country that puts a name on athletic teams:
instead of calling a baseball team 'New York', they are called the "Yankees", or the "Tigers" instead of Detroit. This is a mild example that gets rabid once you cross into college sports with all the mascots.
Whereas in the UK you have football teams that simply go by their town or area: i.e. Manchester United, Liverpool, Stoke etc
