The Amtrak boxes are huge and many bikes don't even require lowering the saddle to fit. I only needed to turn the bars, rotate them down and remove the pedals. According to their web site the Amtrak boxes are 69 x 41 x 8.5 inches (175 x 104 x 22 centimeters).
Big (XL frame size) City Bike, wheel base is around 1100mm and it runs 700c wheels. I have had a couple of others where I have had to remove the stem too. IIRC the overall length is around 190cm.
