Congrats on joining the 'mechanical female' ranks! I was in my 20's when I wheedled my dad into teaching me how to change oil in my car AND how to do the basics of bike repair/maintenence. Tires I figured out on my own. The bike issue was the more important one since LBS-es in my part of the US weren't that 'local' and a I had better things to do with my money (like eating, gas in said car) than pay some guy to do what I should be able to do.

Adjusting gears are the bane of my existence and I've had to completely relearn that from the internet. Between me and my husband, I'm the more mechanical between us. He makes up for it by being the 'computer god'.
