The limit is set by tyre clearance at the brakes and the rear chainstay bridge. Have a look and see how much room you have spare.
If you have a typical racing bike you will be able to fit 25mm easily, and possibly some narrower 28mm. Different makes vary widely in their actual width even if they have the same designation.
