Now right is loose and left is tight, unless it's the other pedal, or there are 2 men on base and less than 2 outs..... I usually end up making circles with one hand to remind me which way to go.

I always remember that the pedals thread on when the drivetrain is freewheeling (backpedalling). BTW, hex wrenched work OK but you need a fairly long one (or a hex drive socker in a socket wrench) to get enough torque. Don't forget to lightly grease the threads!
