when I was using a ramped chainring I had many more problems with the chain dropping. If you think about it it makes sense. Chainrings that are designed to be used with a derailer have a pattern machined into the teeth that allows for the chain to fall or derail onto the other chainring. This is helpful for the application that the rings were designed for but for a SSFG is can become a problem. I don't know if the chainrings on your bike are ramped or not but if they are i would recommend heading over to an LBS and asking them for a cheap SS chainring. The lower end ones only cost $20-30 and could save you a lot of trouble.
