Most of my tours are solo, so it isn't an issue.

But I take a few tours with buddies. I don't consider myself a fast rider, but I like to maintain a steady, uninterrupted pace and finish the day early in the afternoon at some interesting place. That gives me plenty of time and daylight to check in at the hotel or set up my campsite, clean up, chat with some locals and wander about a bit. My buddies like to stop at every beer dive, scenic vista or watermelon patch along the way, even if it means almost dark by the time they arrive at their destination. I love these guys and enjoy their company, but staying with them during the ride would drive me stir crazy. So it is not unusual for us to split up for the day, sometimes for days, and regroup later at some point we identify on the map.

Of course that's with other strong, competent cyclists. If my wife toured, I'd feel obligated to stay with her or at least keep her within sight. I bought a tandem, but I really don't like touring on it. That probably explains why I've never prompted her to get into touring.
