I had never used DT shifters before. The left is indexed but the right (fd) is friction. I was surprised how smooth the shifts from it are - and dead quiet if you do it right. Even though I did this with some left over parts, I bet you could do it on the cheap if you scour ebay and craigslist for used parts. I bet you could do it for under $1k easy (minus the zipps).
