Bikes: 2026 Crumpton T5, 2016 Richard Sachs, 2010 Carl Strong, 2006 Cannondale Synapse

Some questions:

Please tell us your age: 50, as of this past Sunday. Woo-hoo!

1. What type of bikes do 50+ folks ride? I ride road bikes. Currently own a 2006 Cannondale Synapse Carbon 2 and a 1985 Bridgestone 600, I'm taking delivery of a Carl Strong travel bike (S&S couplers) sometime this week or next, and I'm still about 2 (or maybe 3?) years away from taking delivery of a Richard Sachs Signature.

2. Do you take any special supplements/vitamins/minerals as you have grown older? Currently consuming a variety of supplements, based on a combination of my PCP's recommendation, Dr. Andrew Weil's "antioxidant cocktail", and empirical results of the past decade's experiments: Vitamin C, Vitamin D, Vitamin E, Selenium, a Carotenoid complex, Astragalus, Calcium, and Glucosamine-Chondroiten. And sometimes Vitamin B, although it makes my pee flourescent.

3. How much do you feel you have "slowed down" if any? Meh, it's hard to tell. I didn't really start riding "seriously" until 2006, so for the most part I'm a stronger cyclist now than I've ever been. But I can definitely sense how it's a tenuous and short-lived position.

4. How long have you been biking? Started when I was 7 years old, and was pretty much never without a bike ever since. However, for most of my adult life I was a "utility cyclist", using the bike for commuting to school or work, running errands, little jaunts around the neighborhood. Only in the past 5 years have I started doing long, challenging rides.

5. What type of biking do you do? Recreational club rides and distance events primarily. I prefer fast cooperative group rides with varied terrain (...but not varied road surfaces! I love smooth asphalt, hate hard pack!) Love to climb, love to descend even more, and there's nothing quite like the sweetspot of a tight paceline working in harmony.

6. How often do you bike? Your approximate annual mileage? Several days a week, averaging between 135-150 miles per week. For the last 3 or 4 years I've hit between 7-8000 miles annually.

7. Other activities: I'm a former professional musician (bass player) who still performs regularly in several different rock and jazz ensembles. But aside from carrying my equipment to & from a gig, I don't have any other physical activities besides cycling!
