Based on the 500's calculations of my ride today it comes out to 43 cals/mile. Granted, the garmin may not be all that accurate but I'm not sure cals/mile is a good measure either. What about coasting down a hill or climbing something steep? Maybe it all averages over the long haul but seems HR based calculations would be more reliable as they take into account coasting and climbing to some extent.
