The entry fee alone is $500+, and most folks get hotel on top. Plus you have to fly the bike out. You're looking at a $2-3K outlay just for the right to show up and race one single race.
I started from scratch last year. From the top of my head, this is what an IM cost me...just about 5K. No aero wheels. No fancy bike. A HIM would have been about the same save for a few hundred in the race fee.
